Personal and Professional Background

Stuart has practiced in our insurance litigation group since joining the firm in 1994. He has developed his specialist insurance law practice to enable him to provide a broad range of legal services to Australian based and international authorised insurers, underwriting agencies, general insurance brokers, self insurers and public authorities on all aspects of their general liability (public and product liability) contract works and construction liability exposures and property damage aims.

Stuart’s public liability practice includes litigated and unlitigated claims for personal injury, product liability and property damage, as well as indemnity advice and drafting of relevant insurance provisions and litigation for insureds and insurers in respect of policy interpretation.

Stuart acts for a number of insurers and underwriting agencies on a broad range of property damage and business interruption claims and for a number of insurers and insureds in cases arising out of construction disputes and building failures. He advises on policy response and acts in defence of claims involving head building contractors, structural and geo technical engineers, project managers and architects.

Stuart is a member of the Australian Insurance Law Association, the Australian & New Zealand Sports Law Association and the Australian Insurance Institute, and is active in both NIBA and RIMA. He is a regular presenter to client groups and insurance bodies on topics such as the operation of the Civil Procedure Act 2005 and its impact on claims and risk management; emerging civil liability trends; and contract/risk management and the role of insurance.
